ubuntu server 12.04 install fails at starting up partitioner

Asked by Trevor Anderson

I am installing ubuntu server 12.04 on a HP DV7-4002tx laptop from CRROM ISO. Installation fails at "starting up partitioner" with a blank screen and no failure message. System is a clean install with 1 disk partition for entire disk.

Hi Marco

I ran a integrity check from menu "check disk for defects" and it came
back as 100% OK. Not sure about the MD5# as there is no option on install
menu?

Regards

Trevor

ok so the cd is good... please verify/change if there are some options to check the disk settings access mode into pc bios

Then please tell why you are installing server release on a laptop ?

If you try other ubuntu desktop release are you able to install, i mean do you have same error on partition stage ?

Hi Marco

Installing Server on Laptop to trial Vmware workstation prior to
committing to a beefy machine. I want a cut down machine and have not
tried desktop release.

Hi Marco

I updated BIOS to latest prior to attempting install, I checked BIOS and
there is no disk access settings options. The machine was factory loaded
with MS Win7 if that helps with diagnosisŠ

So please try desktop release or the 10.04.4 server release to check if it works ?

Also please made a complete ram memory check...

http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/

Please don't change media to install: use the cd to try the 12.04 server, there are some failure installing from usb stick

Hi again

Thanks for your persistence. I downloaded Server 10.04.4. Same failure -
blank screen at "Starting up partitioner". Ran memory test - 100% Pass.
Not sure what to do now...

Might be a faulty hard-disk please also verify you have not some virus protection active into your bios settings

Eventually fixed the problem by using a bootable iso utility to remove all
old partitions, create new partition and reformat the drive. Thanks for
your help.
