New quad core i7 PC - which version of Ubuntu ?

Asked by Gary

I am having a new quad core 64bit i7 PC built for me, which should arrive in the next couple of weeks, installed with Windows 7 !
I want Ubuntu on the PC - but cannot find a definitive answer as to whether Ubuntu will work properly on it.
I have downloaded the 64bit AMD version - on advice from various Ubuntu related sites, but I want to ask the gurus themselves.
You might want the full spec of the PC to give a proper answer and I can supply that, if necessary.
And the answer is ...........

Does it have a separate video card or are you using the Intel Sandy Bridge GPU?

The processor (Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Processor i7-3820 (3.6GHz) 10MB Cache) does not have integrated graphics, so I have bought a 2GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 560 Ti. The motherboard is "ASUS® P9X79: INTEL® SOCKET LG2011" and the memory "16GB KINGSTON HYPERX GENESIS QUAD-DDR3 2133MHz".
I don't think any other hardware should make any difference to the answer.

Just that fact that you've got 16Gb memory means you already have the correct release - the 64bit one. The machine will perform much better than if you were trying to run the 32bit pae kernel.

The Nvidia drivers are well broken at the moment (I'm assuming you got 12.04 LTS) so just go with the Nouveau drivers for now. I'm quite impressed with how smooth the Nouveau drivers are now.

In the meantime while waiting until it arrives you may research with hardware specs.
