Ubuntu 11.10 on Sony VPCEH18FG

Asked by Hein Basson

My wife just bought a Sony VPCEH18FG notebook, and I wanted to format the hard drive and load Ubuntu 11.10. Sony customer service made it clear to me that the notebook won't operate correctly, and they will not offer any support.
What are the risks of loading Ubuntu 11.10 on the notebook. I am not Linux/Ubuntu experianced, and my wife even less so.

Sony are Microsoft partners so want you to use their stuff.

You can run the OS from a USB stick to test. This will not affect the installed OS. You may need a boot option to get the touchpad working (Sony touchpads are stupid) otherwise it should be ok
