Ubuntu should work fine on an inspiron6400.

see http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/make/Dell/laptops

There should be no need for special drivers.

I suggest you get your self an install CD. These are often available with computing magazines or you can create your own by downloading from the link below

http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download

This site gives all the instructions you need.

If you are worried, or if you still need windows sometimes then you can make the machine dual boot, but if not go Ubuntu full time. I have.

I don't think you will have any problems. Ask again here once Its installed and we will try to help

Thanks for your reply. I have installed ubuntu 11.10 in my dell laptop
model inspiron 6400 with 32 bit. The problem is that I am completely new to
ubuntu but still trying my best to learn the commands. It's really very
tough task to install the application in comparison to windows. Whenever
I'm trying to install, it's giving the message to have internet connection.
Is it possible to download drivers or anyother application without having
internet connection? If not, then how I should make the internet connection
using either bluetooth modem in my phone or G-link CDMA modem device coz I
don't have any idea to install those modems in linux though I'm using it in
windows xp. Now I got both the OS installed in my system, i.e. dualboot.
Please kindly provide me the support and help. Looking forward to hearing
from you soon. Thanking you.

Nabin

Support for several mobile broadband devices is available in Ubuntu without the need to install additional software.

Please see https://help.ubuntu.com/11.10/ubuntu-help/net-mobile.html for instructions.

I've also just installed ubuntu 11.10 on an inspiron 6400 - OK so far but can't get the screen to 1920X1080 0n the monitor I have the intel graphics adapter in this laptop. I see on the above URL that the 6400 has only been certified for the ATI graphic adapter - how to get the correct driver installed?

Please do not change topics in answers like it happened in this one.

The original question was if Ubuntu would work in an inspiron 6400
Then the question was changed to G-link CDMA modem devices
The title currently reads How to Remove write-protected file or remove blacklisted file?
Next detail is about screen resolution
And finally a question about vlc media player was added.

You will for sure get quicker and better answers when you start a new question about each new topic.

Sorry about that, Manfred, I thought I was on topic with Q's about the 6400 on Ubuntu - not to worry - I see I am banned from the site however....
