Ubuntu howto install: RAM and Hard disk

Asked by dolphin69

How do you check your RAM and Hard Disk Space? Don't know what is wrong with my computer. When I tried to upgrade to version 10.04 my computer wouldn't boot anymore. So I got an old disk that I had which I thought was version 8.10, but was actually version 5.04 which is no longer supported. So I tried dowloading the previous version of 9 something that is still supported and at first the files were on the computer but firefox was still saying that I had version 5.04 so yesterday I tried to open it again and it said file does not exist. So I tried downloading the 11.04 beta version, but is still showing I have version 5.04 and the files for 11.04 are on my computer. Any suggestions? Please help me. Thank you.

Please:

1) download the ubuntu 11.04 using torrent protocol ( today is the 11.04 release day ) the torrent protocol will give you the best way to download an error free ubuntu (11.04) iso image

2) check the md5 of downloaded iso image ( please always do this with installation iso cd image files ) and compare with the official md5

3) burn the verified iso image to a cd at lower speed you can do and with burning software data verify active

4) boot your pc entirely from the self made cd and install

What is md5? I was using a CD-R disk. Do I need a CD-RW one? If so, I guess I will go to big lots tomorrow andn see if they have any. I have a CD-Rom and a DVD Rom and I'm not even sure if they work or not. All I know is the light comes on when you open it. Thank you for helping me I appreciate it. Take care.

a cd-rw disk lets you erase the contents and reuse the disk. however, these are more expensive and burn at a slower rate than cd-r disks. it would be a good idea to use a cd-rw disk because the opsys changes over time and become obsolete.

as to 10.04 not booting, what is your system configuration? how much ram do you have? how big is your hard drive? etc.

what problem did you encounter that prevented your installation? did you get a black screen with blinking cursor? etc.

Well I don't really know how to burn a cd-rw. I thought you just put it in the drive and hit download is that right? I don't have any yet, but I will try and get some at big lots tomorrow. I don't know how to check system configuration. There is nothing under system when I click on it that says configuration. And when I click on memory under device it all says unknown and when I click on advanced it brings up a whole list of stuff. And don't know how to check for hard disk space either. When I upgraded to version 10.04 it wouldn't boot it said it couldn't sync. And when I tried downloading the other versions that I mentioned nothing happenened. Firefox is still showing that I have version 5.04. And also there are some websites that I haven't been able to get on for a long time such as facebook and I used to be able to. My other computer is broke down saying that that the local area connection is unplugged which isn't true because I'm on this one. Time Warner thinks it's the ethernet cable, but I think it might be that cable that plugs into the laptop and has a huge square like thing on the top of it that plugs into the side of the laptop. I'm getting a HP refurbished computer soon that has windows 7. Can you put a cd-rw in a dvd rom drive to download linux? Thank you for all of your help. I appreciate it. Have a great day.

Are you able to boot from CD-ROM to a version newer than 9.10, and run "Try" option ?

I don't know. I'm not even sure if my CD-ROM and DVD-ROM work. I do
know that there was no sound coming from the DVD-ROM when it was
downloading and I do know that after I upgraded to 10.04 my computer
wouldn't boot. Kept saying it couldn't sync.

Please don't post with previous message included. I can't help you if you can't boot from a CD-ROM of version equal or newer than 9.10. What happens if you try with such a CD-ROM ?

Yeah I just tried downloading ubuntu 11.04-desktop-i386.iso.torrent and it didn't take either. Could that mean that maybe my CD-ROM isn't working? The icon for it is on my desktop and all of the files are on my computer. Why does everybody get mad when I reply through my email? It really irritates me because I don't see what the big deal is.

"Why does everybody get mad when I reply through my email?" You reply with inserting previous post. It makes thread huge. As we manage many threads, we have to read whole thread each time someone post on it, and if there is useless data, we loose time.
If you can't boot from any CD-ROM, else you have CD burning issue or BIOS boot order issue. Could you try to install from a USB key. How to process is explained in Ubuntu page with download.

Well I was able to install the version 5.04 from a CD. To burn a CD does that just involve inserting the CD and hitting download? Or is there more involved?

Thank you zvacet. Yeah I don't think my drives have burning capabilities. Thats probably the whole problem. I have a CD-ROM and a DVD ROM. I will call a technician that I know and see if he can come here today and check for me and possibly purchace one from him. I don't really want to call him because the last time he was here he hit on me, but I don't know any other technicians that will come out to the house. But I don't understand why my computer wouldn't boot after upgrading to version 10.4 a few days ago. Anyway, have a great day and I will talk to you later.

"But I don't understand why my computer wouldn't boot after upgrading to version 10.4 a few days ago. Anyway, have a great day and I will talk to you later." Perhaps a new kernel was delivered. It's implies building a new boot loading configuration file, and sometimes it fails (don't know why). In this case, installing again Grub2 (boot loader) from Ubuntu CD fix usually the issue. So it's recommended to have always an Ubuntu CD of 9.10 or later.

Can you help with this problem?
