Can't install Linux on Mac

Asked by jeffery greer

Everytime I tried to boot up Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my Macbook, I got this:

"unable to find a medium containing a live file system"

What does this mean and how can it be fixed? Is there another version of Ubuntu that'll work?

The Macbook I'm using is the 7.1 edition....it's one of the newer ones purchased last year.

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?

I have no clue what that means. I can tell you that I tried to use an older
CD, about a few months older than the macbook itself, and it worked on my
old HP just fine.....though that had an AMD Turion II chip in it.......

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

You have failed to test the health of the image file you have so you have NO way of knowing if it is complete or consistent. You can also start to boot the CD and make it test itself for consistency

Can you boot other CDs. Don't macs have a dumb key to hold down because they don't have BIOSes to configure...

Maybe I'm not wording this properly. I tried putting in the disc to boot off
of so I can see for myself if I was still interested. I get the message when
I boot from the disc. It goes through the normal boot-up, says Ubuntu, tries
to load up, and then the message appears.

I hope that is more helpful

If its bad then I suggest you make a new CD with an MD5 tested ISO and burn the CD as slowly as possible

OK, thanks. Do you think I would be able to boot off an iPod in disk mode instead, though?

possibly, not sure how transferring the ISO to the device will affect the data on the device though. You really like Apple's overpriced stuff don't you

I don't care about the data on the iPod because I use that as an external junk drive. I'm just going to try it, anyway

One quick question.

Since I'm installing on a Macbook 7.1 and it's NOT a pro, do I need to do something different other than the usual Pro fixes, or will they work (besides backlit keyboards, obviously) with no problem?

I don't want to waste my time trying to install Ubuntu again if there's something special I need to do for my Macbook (again, NOT A PRO), and don't know what I need to do.

Should be ok, you may need some small tweaks for sound. I'm not sure what network hardware is used but there will be guides around for them.

OK, thank you very much for your help. I've gone to another forum and didn't get this much help in two days. Thanks again :D

sounds like you have an older mac that doesn't use the intel cpu.
in this case, you need to download the ppc version of ubuntu.
just google "ubuntu ppc"
