I need to direct connect to an XP home system

Asked by Mac Boney

I have an older laptop that crashed on me. I have gotten it booted using Ubuntu. Problem is CD drive is not recognized either by Ubuntu or XP prior to now. Replaced theCD drive, still not recognized. I need to use the cd drive on another computer to load utiliities onto older laptop to clean up virus mess and possibly reinstall XP again. I have been able to retrieve the important data and have it filed away on a flash drive. If I could make a boot able copy of FIX-IT Professional or Norton's Internet Security, I could clear up the virus problem. But, CD is down. How can I direct connect the two computers. Now, one other thing, please don't speak too heavily in GEEK. I'm a 60 something grandfather with a messed up computer who is trying to get his older one going for one of the grandchildren. Go easy on me!

I have the correct cable (ethernet looking crossover) XP is set up to be the control for the operation. Where to now?
Even being able to make a true image copy of Norton's or Fix-It onto flash drive will work, actually simpler.

your post is kind of confusing.

on which computer is the cd that you want to get to work?

and FYI, we don't support windoze here. we can get your ubuntu up and runing and make a connection to your windoze system and that's it.

The new laptop has XP Home on it and that CD works. The older laptop has XP
Pro, but has a virus and the CD is not being recognized. I replaced the CD
itself to no avail. I need to get utilities software running on the older
laptop to clean it up. I got my data out using Ubuntu but I want to clean
it up and get back to XP to give my granddaughter to use for homework etc.
She primarily needs word and Power Point. Many of her classes in the 9th
grade demand Power Point. I know I can make a copy of FiX-IT or Norton
Internet Security onto a flash drive but I do not know how. I got Ubuntu
onto a flash drive to get the older laptop booted, but I can not clean it
up. Thanks for any help or suggerstions on where to turn.

many things you can do:

1) ditch windoze and install ubuntu and get away from all the crap about virii and windoze. the majority of virii out there are written to attack windoze, not ubuntu. also, ubuntu has openoffice/libreoffice which offers applications similar to word and powerpoint and are just as powerful and free.

2) reinstall windoze over the virii ridden windoze.

3) boot into safe mode by pressing F8 repeating after you boot the laptop, then do a system restore.

this is a linux forum and we don't support windoze, but i can tell you that you can make an anti-virus boot disk from the working laptop to run on the infect laptop. you just stick the disk in the cd and boot from the cd.

You replied to me: "i can tell you
that you can make an anti-virus boot disk from the working laptop to run
on the infect laptop. you just stick the disk in the cd and boot from
the cd." That would be true but the CD drive on the infected computer does
not work right now. I don't know if it is a hardware or softwear problem,
just that it will not read a disk or is not being recognized by the system.
Just making a copy of a disk onto a flash drive will not work because it is
not a complete image of the application software. If I could do a copy of
the utility software onto a flash drive that would boot, my problem would be
solved.

You can boot to the Ubuntu CD to access the data. You should have a backup if your data is important though but the CD should be able to read the NTFS partition.

Is this the intention?

NO. The older laptop that I am trying to clean up has a CD drive that will
NOT work. I need to make a copy of an application that is a complete image
so I can install the software and then clean up the hard drive. I have a
copy of my data, I just need to install some software on a computer that has
a CD drive that will not work. I tried a direct connection between two
computers, one with a CD that works and one with a CD drive that will not
work. I could not make the connection. So, I will try what should be
simpler, creating an image on a flash drive so the ISO files are there so
the flash drive can be bootable.

You could make an ISO of the CD using Ubuntu then mount the ISO in the desired OS using magicdisk in Windows or mount in Ubuntu. Should be ok

he just wants to resurrect his windoze laptop. he doesn't want to install ubuntu in any way.

@mac

Yes, I do want to ressurect a computer with Windows on it. My granddaughter
can not use Ubuntu or Open Office in doing homework. She is required to
operate in Windows and Office. I can not help that. You answers seem to be
very biased. You might love Ubuntu, I don't know it well enough to pass an
opinion, so I will reserve my comments for something I know something about.
I can tell you this much though, your arrogant remarks will not sell anyone
on Ubuntu. Forgive my intrusion into your world. I will go back to
professionals that give professional answers, not a child who tries to act
so superior to anyone who knows less about a very technical field. Good
day.

it's ridiculous that the school is forcing her to use windoze and ms office.

well, i have given you several valid ways of resurrecting your laptop. if you're not going to follow them, i'd suggest you take the laptop to some computer repair place and pay to have this done.

Marcus, if you can't answer people's questions respectfully, then I
would request that you don't answer them at all.
answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu is one of the public faces of Ubuntu and
