Could check MD5 of ISO image: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM
Could be also an issue when you burned CD. At boot, press a key. You should get a menu. In this one, select "Check CD for defect".
Why do you use 8.04.1, whom support will stop next, instead of 10.04.1 ?

Hi Delance, first, I used 8.04.1 because I have the original disk and
it is unmarred.
I need an OS that will run on a Pentium III laptop, and I am a novice
so I used what I already had. Thanks for the check CD tip I will try
that. Will also try the MD5 of ISO image. Again Thank You - Marv

Could you provide hardware configuration (RAM and disk size).
Perhaps a light and recent distro could be a better solution.

Here follows Marcobraida advices on low configuration:

- if you pc is a very low resource pc you can try different Linux distribution something like:

 Slitaz http://www.slitaz.org/ : Slitaz 3.0 release note http://www.slitaz.org/en/doc/releases/3.0/relnotes.en.html
 Video on Slitaz http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YQrBgNGQrw

InRe: sys info request: Intel Pentium III 800MHz. HD 30GB 248Meg
RAM (know 256 optimal)

First, Install completed then the auto install check started and all
checks up to: checking the installation/installing system/detecting
file system{progressed to 15%} computer locked up. Hardy heron screen
was displayed however there was no task bar either at the top or
bottom of screen. I am not sure how to access the system files or
MD5sum since the system installation is incomplete. Since the OS is
not loaded completely, not sure how to access terminal mode. I am too
new to recognize if the RAM could be the issue, your thoughts??
Thanks Marv

About MD5, on which computer is ISO file ? If it is a Windows or a Mac OS one, you could check.
You can also check directly on CD:
   https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM#MD5SUM%20on%20CD
"RAM could be the issue ?" : I don't think so, CD issue seems more probable.

Deleted/uninstalled Ubuntu 8.10LTS and installed 9.10. Factory disc must have contained a flaw. Thanks to all who contributed

Hi, sorry for the delay, but I finally resolved the issue. I was able
to uninstall the Ubuntu 8.10 LTS and install 9.10 and it runs great.
Thank you for taking the time to work with me on this problem, It is
great to know there are a lot of good smart guys out there who will
take the extra step to assist us newbies.
