Ubuntu 10.10 crashes after about ten minutes.

Asked by Julio E. Sada

I recently received a bootable copy of Ubuntu 10.10. I uninstalled 9.10 and, after many tries, managed to get Ubuntu 10.10 installed to run alonside Windows XP. But, just like the previous version, after about ten minutes or so, it crashes. I did as a friend suggested to increase the hard disk shut-down time to 3 hours. But I left the monitor shut-down time the same..about 15 minutes. I plan to increase that time too, today.

But if the crashing continues I don't know what to do. I have already checked my RAM and it tested OK, after a very very long test.

Can you describe "crashes" a little more? It is hard to know what the cause of it is from that..

* Does your machine boot?
* Do you see the ubuntu logo?
* Do you see a mouse pointer?
* Can you reach the login screen?
* Can you boot from a "live CD"?

Hi MYCAE,

Yes the machine boots. I get the screen which gives me a choice of Ubuntu 9.10 'generic', Ubuntu 9.10 'generic recovery' or Microsoft Windows XP. I usually pick the generic. Then I get the login screen. I can login, give my password and the typical 'classic ?' orange screen appears. I can open applications, begin creating Word documents, or view a web page through Firefox.....then suddenly....CRASH!!! and all I can do is Shut Down the hard way.

If I can get specific instructions on how to alter some line of code in Windows or in the Ubuntu boot sequence, I think I can do it.

I really like Linux; I think it beats Windows hands down. But right now I need some help.

I don't know how to test the ram for errors. I never knew that ram could have errors...i always thought that ram was a relatively static entity. Anyway it seems that this last time that I went into Ubuntu, which uses the Linux Kernel 2.6.31-22 generic, GNOME 2.281, and is listed as having 2.7 GiB of Memory, I was in for about twice as long as usual...about 20 min. before it CRASHED again.
So, I shut it down using the ON/OFF button. Then I got back in and am in Firefox entering this message right now.

When you boot, hold SHIFT and you will see the kernels and the last optionn will be memtest.

RAM can fail just like any other device. RAM is used to hold apps while they run so if it is faulty, you will get issues.

If it is bad, you will see this:

Hi actionparsnip,

I tried the hold the SHIFT button down during the boot. I have Ubuntu alongside Windows XP. I get to choose which OS I want. I usually select Ubuntu simply because it is so much faster than Windows.
So I down arrowed to Ubuntu and pressed ENTER, then immediately held the SHIFT key down, which then displayed the GRUB title you mentioned. But there was no option called "memtest" that I could select in order to test the memory.
Would uninstalling version 9.10 and installing version 10.10, which I am getting update requests for already remedy this CRASHING or would it open up another can of worms?
   Thanks for all you do.

Hi marcobra,

I got into the BIOS and changed the Boot Sequence so it would boot from the CD-ROM first. Then I booted from my installation CD, and lo and behold I saw the infamous "Memtest." So I ran it. It was a LOOOOOOOOONG-ASS test , but after, it showed OK...NO Problem. Now I'm thinking that the Installation Disc being bad or has a corrupted section. But I don't know how to check it.
Anyway, it has already CRASHED once before this e-mail

Hi delance,

I'll try this suggestion. I am also trying to download an 10.10 ISO to burn to bootable CD to see if this will eliminate the problem. I actually was quite satisfied with whatever version of Ubuntu I had before(9.04, I think) I tried to load 9.10. It was just that I kept getting those messsages about "this version of Ubuntu is no longer supported." I should have left well enough alone.
I'll try your suggestion and get back to you.

Your question #136720 on ubiquity in ubuntu changed:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+question/136720

Summary changed to:
Ubuntu 10.10 crashes after about ten minutes.

Description changed to:
I recently received a bootable copy of Ubuntu 10.10. I uninstalled 9.10
and, after many tries, managed to get Ubuntu 10.10 installed to run
alonside Windows XP. But, just like the previous version, after about
ten minutes or so, it crashes. I did as a friend suggested to increase
the hard disk shut-down time to 3 hours. But I left the monitor shut-
down time the same..about 15 minutes. I plan to increase that time too,
today.

But if the crashing continues I don't know what to do. I have already
checked my RAM and it tested OK, after a very very long test.
