I recommend installing windows first, and ubuntu second, as windows does not respect the bootloaders of other operating systems. You may want to limit the amount of drive space you use for your windows install during setup, in order to leave space for your ubuntu install

Choose "side by side". So the process is automatic.
For size of Windows and Ubuntu partition, it's to you to choose. Simply remind that Windows can't read Ubuntu's partition, but Ubuntu can read and write into Windows partitions.
For Ubuntu, use at least 8GB.

For Windows, opt for NTFS, FAT32 is a very old file system designed for floppy disk: not fast, not very reliable.
For Ubuntu, use ext4.

Hai,

thank you very much for the valuable guidance. i hope i can proceed with this. one last querry, if i choose ubuntu installation as "side by side" after installing win xp under NTFS file system, then also will ubuntu ask for its own file system or will it proceed with NTFS.
