unable to use dvd-rw and dvd-cd rw in ubuntu 10.10

Asked by Bill Huff Sr

im using ubuntu 10.10 in my IBM netvisa. I have had no luck in installing any programs in ubuntu, as I really have no idea how to do it correctly. I like linux very much but i fear i wil not be able to use it after all. i have 2 instaled dvd/cd rw's in my netvista. today i attempted to play a DVD in the lite-on drive and found that none of the players would play any DVDs at all. i have gone through all the programs installed and looked for a solution to this problem to no avail. i went to several sites at firefox looking for codecs and or fixes for this and found none. when i have tried before to follow specific instrutions to download files to the system i have been unsucesfull evey time. should i do a reboot to the system from the instalation disc? or should i just reboot this pc with windows xp pro? I really like the linux system but its way too complicated for a novice like myself to operate othere than simple functions as checking email and going to selected urls ect. very frustrated as it took me weeks to get this working the way it should for everyday use. please help if possible. Frustrated user!

thank you very much for this information. unfortunately i have no idea
at all how to use terminals or enter this info to get these results. ny
forte is repairing mechanical systems, replacing or repairing boards and
drive components and the like. if it doesn't download and install from a
cd/dvd or from the manufacturers site or windows, i am completely lost.
i need to take Linux, beginners for idiots.
I shall try to figure out the info and enter it correctly and let you
know if I have any success. thank you again.

You don't need to know how to use a terminal if someone gives you a command, just open a terminal and copy and paste the text in which I am VERY sure you can do. It's just text.

what is exactly you can't do?
if you don't know where to find the terminal you can find it from the top panel go to Application --> Accessories --> Terminal
or you can do it like delance said "Ctrl + Alt + T" and the terminal will open for you "Username@Machinename:~$" here you paste the commands actionparsnip gave you "sudo wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list && sudo apt-get --quiet update && sudo apt-get --yes --quiet --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get --quiet update; sudo apt-get install -y libdvdread4; sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get -y upgrade"

after you paste these the terminal will ask for your password it will show you something like this "[sudo] password for Username:"
type your password it will be invisible after you enter it will download, install and update you system
once it finished it will return to this "Username@Machinename:~$"

in you do you mean you have an application on a cd/dvd and you want to run it on linux
if there is a linux version of the application you can get help to install it
and if there is only windows version you can try wine to run it but not all windows application can be run
we can help you to install wine and installing you application if it can be run on wine

i tried that and the messages were no files to be found and gnome not
found. Could the problam be the version that's installed? i installed
this version from my original 9.04 disc and updated it via the Internet.
it says the version now installed is maverick meerkat 10.10. that should
be the right version. it also keeps asking me to put in the cd meerkat
10.10 and hit enter . when i do that it either says cant mount cdrom or
file not found. I am quite puzzled.

Open software centre, edit the sources and uncheck the CD as a repository and you won't get bothered for the CD again
