Totem doesn't play videos when youtube is open in firefox.

Asked by Justin Johnson

When I have Firefox open with youtube, or even if youtube had been open but isn't currently, videos will only play very slowly with no sound in Totem. When I close firefox and then reopen the video, it plays fine. Not really a huge deal, but it is kind of annoying.

Sorry, can't reproduce the issue here, able to run Website- and Totem YouTube video both with sound.
Which Ubuntu version?
I use PulseAudio on HardyLTS with package 'libflashsupport', installed via Synaptic.

Which flashplayer? Version? App e.g. Adobe, gnash, swfdec?

What steps did you take to debug, any error messages when you start firefox and totem in a terminal and reproduce the issue?
Any related error messages in .xession-errors (hidden in /home/user) when reproducing?

Thanks for the information and please take your time to read references.
In the meantime you may try some options.
Please open gstreamer-properties in system -> preferences
It will open also if you type the command in a terminal:
gstreamer-properties

There is a video tab, usually the output plugin is set to 'detect automatically'.
Please change this to 'X Window (no Xv)

Please test the behaviour of Totem and YouTube again.

ok, that fixed the initial problem. thanks.
i still don't know if it fixed the problem with flash applications closing firefox, as it seems to do that rather sporadically.

That's good news Justin. In case of taking further steps, I'd assume that Compiz is running, you may turn of visual effects; refering to my comment here:
