Perhaps totem is misconfigured and using the wrong video output device.

Which webbook are you using? What version of totem and ubuntu are you using? Are you doing anything else while playing the video?

maybe codec problem

I have the same problem as Richard.

I have a MPEG2 file which I can watch with VLC, but not with TOTEM.
I do not understand the codec explanation.
When I have downloaded the proper codecs to my computer, the VLC can uncode the video file, and I understand that the TOTEM would use the same codec file as the VLC program. Thus, missing codec would cause that neither VLC or TOTEM works, but it does not seem to explain the problem with TOTEM.

With the previous Linux version I had no problems with watching MPEG2 files with TOTEM, but with the new version (8.04) I do not know how I should configure the computer to see the videos...

The thing is, VLC doesn't always use the same codecs as Totem... I believe VLC has additional codecs that only it can use.

Try installing totem-gstreamer and gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg if you haven't already. The latter is found in the universe repository.

Thank you Michael for the information. I have been using and learning Linux for about a year and obviously there are lots of assumptions that may be partly incorrect...

However, I made some more tests.
Initially I used monitor HP p1230 - with which I had the problem. And VLC did not work consistently either...

Then I tested monitor IBM 6627 and the problem disappeared, I can see video with both Totem and VLC.

In fact, the Ubuntu "Hardware testing" does not show Video test properly with my HP p1230 either, and so it seems to me possible that there is some problem with drivers for the HP monitor...

Thus, it seems possible that some other users also have video-problems because of monitors (in addition to codecs)...

Ah, yes... monitors... well, there's supposed to be a standard where the monitor can tell the computer how to configure the monitor. (I think it's called DDC or something). Unfortunately, some monitors tell the computer the wrong information, which confuses the part of Linux that controls the display (known as the X server). It is usually possible to give Linux (i.e. the X server) information in a special text file to tell Linux to work with the monitor in a different way, although this often requires certain numbers often found in little charts in the back of the monitor manuals...

Of course, those should be placed in separate questions to avoid getting issues confused.

So, richard... if you're still there... have you tried playing the video in VLC?

VLC is an alternative program which can be used to play videos.

In order to use it, you need to download it. Look for the "Synaptic Package Manager" in the System/Administration section, and click on it to launch a program which can be used to install VLC.

Play mp3 and dvd under Ubuntu

First please install https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

You need to have extra repositories enabled..

Please first enable the multiverse repository:

Open System->Administration->Software sources-> [ Tab Ubuntu software ]
enable "Software restrictecd by copyright or legal issue ( multiverse )"
Close and confirm the repository reload.

Type the following command in a terminal (applications -> accessories -> terminal)

sudo aptitude install vlc

To get better dvd playback first you need to add the medibuntu http://www.medibuntu.org/ repository to your /etc/apt/sources.list file:
here howto add https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu here the medibuntu available software list http://packages.medibuntu.org/

Then to install:

sudo update
sudo aptitude install libdvdread3 libdvdnav4 libdvdcss2

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Hope this helps
