The HAL daemon is already installed and its job is to manage your computer's devices...

Could you, please, tell me what message do you get?

John, thanks for your fast answer, but I am at time being (That's now) running under Vista (I know nobody's perfect ). Will switch back to Ubuntu within two hours, once my job done. I am trying to learn as much as I can from Linux to switch everything and will send you a screen capture of the system request. It was my understanding that HAL was already installed, but as I am still a neophyte, I might have done some silly thing!

Hal daemon is an essential software already installed on your pc.
Try to restart it, to be sure it works.

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo /etc/init.d/hal restart

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Thank you
