Asked by always lost

I tried to play a movie using all the movie players I could find. They all played the movie but no sound. I installed the codecs from automatix and now it won't even play the movie!

Are you talking about a DVD movie or a video file?
If it's a video file, can you tell us what the audio in this file is encoded in (you can check this by right-clicking on the file, going into Properties and then in the Audio/Video tab)?
Finally, has this file or movie been confirmed to work on other computers?

I have similar problem. Can't find a solution. I have upgraded Feisty to Gutsy. Rythmbox is working fine, but I have no sound in any movie player (both - based xine or gstreamer) nor flash. A few days ago it was working, but not properly - after playing flash in firefox there was no sound in Totem. Sound was back after restarting system (usually).
Now there is no sound in any movie type.
I have biult-in realtec sound card and SB Live! 24. Trying to use Realtec, as I found there is no way for microphone to work with my poor SB!
I enclose amixer dump if it can be of any help to solve this problem:

Well, after rebooting I had (had!) sound in movie players. After next reboot it has gone :(

There are 2 'welcome' ubuntu sounds when starting system.
1st for the login/password screen
2nd when the desktop starts.
If it works like this, there is sound in totem / gxine etc.

But usually there is no 1st (login) sound, and 2nd is delayed (or delayed and different). In this situation I have no sound in totem / gxine, but Rythmbox is sitill working!

      from disc
Please install the necessary plugins and restart Totem to be able to play the media"

Installed "ubuntu-restricted-extras", still get the same error message.
Any help would be much appreciated.

gutsty is not maintained by canonical, no updates/no security updates, you should upgrade your system to ubuntu 8.04.3 or ubuntu 9.10.

Can you help with this problem?
