How does Ubuntu play DVDs? Mine won't.

Asked by Margaret Wheatley

I've finally loaded UBUNTU and got it working, but can't play my DVDs. What programme does it use? How do I access it? I loaded UBUNTU from a DVD, but no other DVD is recognised.

You need a codec installing. The simplest of websearches would have got you this:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/PlayingDVDs

Have you seen this??

Thanks. I was tired after spending the whole afternoon loading UBUNTU onto a netbook and over-riding windows XP. I had made the (wrong) assumption that this programme would play DVDs.

I'm not sure what you mean by "this programme" but Ubuntu certainly *will* play DVD's. Have you checked out the link that actionparsnip posted?

If you open a terminal and run:

sudo wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list && sudo apt-get --quiet update && sudo apt-get --yes --quiet --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get --quiet update; sudo apt-get -y install libdvdread4; sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh; sudo apt-get -y update; sudo apt-get -y upgrade; sudo apt-get -y install vlc gnome-mplayer w32codecs

You will be able to play nearly anything.

Thanks for trying to help. My own fault! I deleted the driver by mistake.
