DVD's Won't play in ubuntu 10.10

Asked by Robert E. Campbell

I have a good install of Ubuntu 10.10, with all current updates... I am very happy with this operating system.

The only problem I have is that DVD's will not play in either Realplayer for Linux, or in the Totem movie player. Music CD's

will play normally in either player, just no DVD's. It is really impressive what many thousands of people can do when motivated

by Good instead of Greed... This operating system is absolutely wonderful... so intuitive. I would like to watch movies... but

if it is not possible... the quality, and professionalism of Ubuntu is what I want... even without movies. Any recommendations ?

Thanks...R.E. Campbell

Details:

With Realplayer ( For Linux) when I try to play a DVD, a window appears stating "Location not Found"

With Totem movie player a window appears stating " An error occurred, could not read from resource"

I would not recommend using realplayer at all HIstorically the realplayer developers blurred the line between software and malware.

Anyway..

encrypted (retail movies) DVD playback is not enabled in ubuntu by default, as the legality of the decryption is dependant upon your location, and there may even be patent concerns. You have to install the ubuntu-restricted-extras package to enable dvd playback (among other things). You need to ensure that you are in compliance with your local laws.

Don't forget, as mentioned in the howo page, you need to also install libdvdread.
