Scanner Detection

Asked by Jacob Moh

I'm using Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04, and I'm quite new Linux. I just recently got my Benq 4300 scanner to work on Ubuntu after several reinstallations of Ubuntu. But everytime I install a new software from synaptics (such as Gnomebaker), Ubuntu is unable to detect the scanner anymore. When I reinstall Ubuntu all over again, and install the scanner driver, it works well - until I use synaptic to install Gnomebaker. Can someone help me understand why this is happening? Can it be resolved? Thanks.

Hi.

Where did you download the driver from?

I see this scanner requires firmware. Is that installed too? Where did you put the firmware?

Dear Michael,

Hi. Between my original post and now, I have kinnda resolved the issue.
I merely uninstalled the sane-backends as well as the libusb-dev
software and reinstalled them both all over again. However, whenever I
update or install any new software, the scanner fails detection again.
So, I go over the process of uninstalling and reinstalling the
sane-backends as well as the libusb-dev.

My firmware (u176v046.bin) is downloaded from the sane website
reference; it works. I installed my firmware
in /usr/local/share/sane/snapscan. Each time I reinstall it, i make
sure the snapscan.conf is correctly directed to the firmware folder.

This all works well and xsane detects the scanner, but when a new
software or update is installed, xsane no longer detects the scanner.

I hope this info helps you diagnose the problem. Thanks for replying to
my post.

Hi.

When you uninstall sane-backends is the firmware removed? Or does it stay in /usr/local/share/sane/snapscan?

Does it work to just unplug and plug back in your scanner? What about unplugging the scanner, rebooting, rebooting again and plugging the scanner in?

Hi Michael. When I uninstall sane-backends the firmware is not removed.
It just stays in the original folder I put it in.

I've also tried hotplugging the scanner by unplugging, rebooting,
rebooting again, and plugging it in again. It doesn't work. What do
you think the issue is here?

Thanks.

I suspect the issue is a bug in the scanner driver. Its unusual for a scanner to stop working when you run an installation. I though maybe the firmware was being deleted or the configuration was being deleted. You said it wasn't.

The scanner failing after every installation is unusual. I suspect its a coincidence that it fails after you do an installation. Something else is probably making it fail.

Once the scanner is working does it stay working after a reboot?

Does the scanner stay working if you just unplug and plug the scanner back in.

Does this scanner have its own power supply or is it powered by USB? I'm wondering it its not being reset properly.

Can you run 'sudo lsusb' and 'sudo sane-find-scanner -qv'. This will show in the sane backends can detect the scanner at all. Try and run this both when its working and when it fails.

Then run 'export SANE_DEBUG_SNAPSCAN=5 && scanimage -vvv > /dev/null'. This should perform a scan. Try and run this both when its working and when it fails.

Hi Michael. When the scanner is working, it continues to work even after
reboot. Even if I unplug and unplug the usb, it continues to work until I
install something else. The scanner has its own power supply.

I'll try your suggestions when I get into my office this morning (it's
currently 6am here). Give me some time and I'll get back to you with the
results. Thanks again for everything.

Hi Michael. Tried your suggestions but the same error appeared
(scanimage: open of device snapscan:libusb:005:002 failed: Invalid
argument). So, I went to synaptic package manager and marked libusb for
reinstallation. Then, I uninstalled my sane-backend-1.0.20 ("sudo make
uninstall") and restarted my computer.

After reboot, I was going to reinstall the sane backend but something
interesting happened: I decided to try your suggestions once more and,
to my surprise, the scanner began scanning when I typed 'export
SANE_DEBUG_SNAPSCAN=5 && scanimage -vvv > /dev/null' in the terminal.

Without reinstalling the sane backend, I used xsane again (with sane
backend uninstalled) and this time xsane detected the scanner and I was
able to scan. So, the scanner is working fine now, it seems. I've
checked my file system: sane and snapscan folders are still intact with
the firmware in place.

I've unplugged the scanner and rebooted my system twice and replugged
the scanner. It works. The, I repeated the procedure. It works even
now. But I'm not sure if it will malfunction again once I install or
update a software.

What do you think the problem was? Maybe a conflict in the libusb or
the sane software? Either way, your suggestions has helped me a lot.
Thank you so much.
