error in synaptic

when i open the synaptic manager i get the following error message

E: The package kernel-image-2.6.24.3-2.6.24 needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.
E: Internal error opening cache (1). Please report.

even after running
 sudo apt-get install -f

i am getting the same error message.....
could anybody help me.........?

Please tell what release of ubuntu are you using...

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

cat /etc/lsb-release

copy and paste result here.

i am using 6.06 dapper version
