edubuntu KDE desktop install

Asked by Sam Neff (Edubuntu User)

I am using Edubuntu. It comes with Gnome installed but I have found that the Gnome Profile Editors don't work very well. I would like to try the KDE Kiosk Admin program. I have used it in Gnome but it doesn't work unless you have KDE 3.2.3 installed. I need to remove Gnome and install KDE or just install KDE and keep Gnome as an option. I need to create a desktop that students cannot change. I also need to restrict them from getting into my server.

What version of Edubuntu are you using?

I was usuing Edubuntu 7.10 however I have since decided to switch to K12LTSP. I really got frustrated with the editor profile program in Edubuntu. K12LTSP has a new version which runs under RedHat Fedora. It seems to perform better although I still can't lock down profiles. I guess I'll have to live with it until they come up with something that actaully works. Thanks for your interest.

Installing the meta-package kubuntu-desktop should install all necessary KDE packages. You can then choose kdm as login manager and KDE as your default login desktop.

Hope this helps.

Okay..You got me interested in Edubuntu again. I like Edubuntu better than K12LTSP because the documentation is a little better. Can you give me a little more detail on the kubuntu-desktop package? Can I use it with Edubuntu? Does it come with Edubuntu? Thanks for your help.

It is in the repository that is configured with edubuntu. Just use the normal way you install packages (adept, synaptic, or just "Add packages".

Thanks, Ralph Janke on 2008-04-24. (https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/synaptic/+question/30115) That answer seems to have pointed me in the right direction.
