my synaptic package manager does not work

each time i attempt to install, i get the following:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

and if i run 'dpkg --configure -a' it says:
musa@ABU:~$ dpkg --configure -a
dpkg: requested operation requires superuser privilege
musa@ABU:~$

Type in the terminal : sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libvte.so.9 /usr/lib/libvte.so.4

Just open terminal and use "sudo dpkg --configure -a" (without quotation marks).
