Try using the Terminal to install Totem.
Update your repository with:
sudo apt-get update
Then, install Totem:
sudo apt-get install totem
HTH.

I thank you so much for answering....
And I am truly sorry but you are now talking to someone that knows nothing,
I am a senior and follow instructions better with just the basic click here
etc. than trying to understand the workings of it all... :)
... Could you please go step by step... for instance, where do I go to for
sudo apt-get update

Accessories-
At this point, you should be on the Terminal (you can see a blinking cursor). Input the command:
sudo apt-get update
and press Enter key - You should be prompted to input your password. Enter your user password and no characters will echo back on your screen (that's just normal).
After the repository update process, Input the other command to install Totem:
sudo apt-get install totem
HTH.

Ian, I am an idiot.... all your directions are great for someone with more
understanding...
What I did was to go to the top left of my screen and click onto
System.... Administration.... and then Synaptic Package Manager... is this
the right place to be in???
I have no understanding of the words you are using to help you at that
end....

Why do you need to install Totem, it's a Ubuntu standard application, isn't it in
applications -> sound & video?
Anyway, as suggested, right click on package name and mark for installation.
e.g.
http://
Further procedure incl. screenshots in section
"Install a Package Using Synaptic Package Manager"
http://

Joy,
while working in a terminal you need to close GUIs, e.g. Synaptic, Software Center, Update Manager ...
Then try again.

To understand where I am.
Somebody installed ubantu on my computer about 2 years back... I loved it
and it was working well until recently when I needed a new hard drive...This
person has moved on to wherever....and then I found another person who could
help me with Linux...
Problem now is person number 2 doesn't know anything about ubantu.... so
they installed ubantu for me and also puppy, puppy being the one they are
used to.... I am told that puppy is the very easiest one to use as
everything is in there right from the start... but I need some time to play
and get used to it... If anyone knows about puppy and can verify that it is
so easy, then I shall go onto that one....
In ubantu I can't get my music to play unless I hold my curser to each
individual song, and if I try to play it on media player (I think it is
called that) this comes up for a second and then goes off the screen and to
where I don't know... Also, I can't play youtube, or the crosswords and
jigsaws... And so person number 2 suggested to get totem up and running
first...... hence my contacting you...

In my opinion Puppy is a very small Linux.
It's for the little PCs that do not have much
ram and such.
I would just have Ubuntu in my system for
OS.
No sense having two linux.
Maybe should ask how to delete Puppy
and to keep Ubuntu.
If you have any files you want to keep
add that to your question also.

You have 3 way to install totem, please choose one:
a) from Application→Ubuntu software center
b) from System→
c) from terminal
Please try option c) so please close all opened Synaptic manager or other package manager for example Application→Ubuntu software center
Then open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
(if the system ask you a password give your user password, you will not see nothing when you type it, then press enter)
sudo apt-get update
sudo aptitude install totem
Hth

Good morning Joy,
to clarify, you have Puppy
http://
and Ubuntu installed.
1. In Puppy a media player (gxine) should be under 'Multimedia'
http://
http://
2. Ubuntu includes already Totem as default media player.
Top Panel -> Applications -> Sound & Video -> Movie Player
http://
3. If you don't find it there we should verify if you're currently running Puppy or Ubuntu.
Type (or better copy & paste) in a terminal:
lsb_release -a
uname -a
## After each line hit [Enter] and post the output here, thanks.
Anyway, in order to make it easier for you and not running into conflicts in the future, I second the recommendation from oocevin to make a choice between the two distributions.
