Xubuntu doesn't allow commands in terminal eventhough I'm the only user

Asked by hynek

I had to reinstall Xubuntu and after upgrading to jaunty jalopy am encountering all sorts of problems.On most I gave up since I should have known not to upgrade when it's working. In terminal I'm receiving messages that files weren't copied or are in depositories that can't be opened because they need keys that aren't available any more. When i take the pain to go through all Xubuntu and Ubuntu documentation and think I found solution then I get stucked in Terminal that wouldn't allow me to use commands since I'm not privileged. I'm a sole user and certain things am allowed to do with my password - I did it when I was using Ubuntu. Momentarily I just want to set power management but I can't because Xubuntu does not support API, at least that's what I'm constantly told. When I leave the machine I have to turn it off manually, since the powermanagent won't do it automatically and is set properly! Ubuntu has the option of sending problems on line but Xubuntu doesn't. Would anybody know if I can fix it somehow? So far everything I found on pages is useless. Thank you

Look does //etc/hosts look like this (first tow lines)

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 host_name

host_name= your comp name

If that is O.K and you still can not use sudo then boot in recovery mode and type

adduser username admin

 username= your username

Thank you,
but I'm sorry the problem is that it wouldn't let me to use sudo only in certain instances, the same applies to dpkg as far as I remember. Bottom panel trebles even quadruples entries and everything is slowed down. Monitor would not apply the screen saver and the machine can hibernate only manually.

Can you issue this command;

sudo su -

That should give you a full foot shell. If that doesn't work, you may need to edit /etc/sudoers

You may also need to compile a custom kernel to support your particular motherboard's power management system.

Xubuntu is intended for low end systems, so a lot of stuff is left out to keep the memory footprint as resonably small as possible, though nothing beats a custom kernel in terms of size and speed, that is, if you know what you're doing otherwise you'll get a kernel and a non-booting system.

Can you help with this problem?
