No sudo access after new VM install

Good afternoon,
I just installed Ubuntu on VirtualBox for the first time and once installed I tried doing a sudo apt update cmd, but I am getting an error I am not a sudoer. Is there anyway I can go about adding the main account to the sudoer list without having those permissions?
