password recognised but system not working

Asked by bozlow

I have gone to the recovery screen and reset my password to 123
I have ubuntu 8.10 set to auto login so it goes straight into my desktop. however every time I need to enter password ie for updating or sudo I enter the correct password and nothing happens. If I put the incorrect password in it tells me I have got it wrong. put in the correct password and nothing.

If I put the password into terminal after sudo i get the message "Segmentation fault"
If I log out and try to log in as another user the machine churns away then returns to the login screen.

Tried to burn iso image to re-install but it wont let me If I don't enter password. anyone have any ideas, The system was working fine until this happened last week.

Something seemas to be wron with your 'sudo' executable.
Try to get root access to your system (for example boot the system in failsafe mode) and reinstall sudo with apt:

# apt-get purge sudo
# apt-get install sudo

Then reboot and try again

Can you help with this problem?
