Keyboard does not function when entering password.

I'm using ubuntu 11.04 today is my first day, I tried to install VLC in the terminal, my command was accepted then asked me to enter my password. But the keyboard would not respond, it simply would not write any character. what is the problem. My keyboard is ok I'm writing this with it now. please help, thank you.

There is no problem, this is normal. Your keyboard is functioning, but to prevent people knowing the length of your password (eg if you were to post the terminal output to the internet), or that you use no password the echo is disabled intentionally.

Once you press enter, your password will be evaluated.
