Root is disabled and not advised nor supported by the Ubuntu community. Your first user you make is in a group named admin and so can run commands prefixed by sudo (for command line commands ONLY) and gksudo (for graphical gtk apps) or kdesu (for kde based gui apps). The gdm / kdm etc configs by default will not even allow root logins and neither will ssh login.

You do not need root, you can do all you need using sudo and gksudo etc. Root beking disabled adds a whole tonne of extra security to your system.

Can you help with this problem?
