No audio on any program

Asked by Tyren

I can't get any sound on any applications, programs, websites or anything. They are all playing, but I can't hear, the players are reading my cds but they're not playing. I've used different media player, but they don't play (Real player, Sound player etc.) And I can't hear on websites either (myspace, etc.)

A "speaker" icon is shown on your desktop?

And, please tell us your sound device.
When you dont know it, type on Terminal(e.g.: gnome-terminal),
 $ lspci
and paste on responce.

I have the same problem with a VIA Technologies AC.97 Sound Chip. I disabled that from my BIOS , but when I came back to Ubuntu I still could not get any sound or opening sounds-nothing ! - and I got a message saying that the sound was disabled. I Tried Sound Juicer Cd Player - I got only CLICKS and the very oaccasional few seconds of music. I sent a "Sound Recorder" attachment to myself and I could play it on "Windows XP", but on Ubuntu I could only SEE the waves of sound on the "Audacity" playback of the attachment. I could not hear anything on "RealPlayer" either. I do hope you can help. pleasegentlemen , but bear in mind that I am a very new Ubuntu operator and technicalities (Terminal ?? what is that @) are beyond me at present. Thank you. whenever I play an audio file on any of the available audio applications, there is a dialogue box that says "Gsmedia stream is not installed" and i had to go online to have it activated. Is there a way that I can have it offline?

Thanks for your time. More power to Linux-Ubuntu.
