Trying to install XArchon game.

Asked by Drewski

I'm looking for a version of the Commodore 64 Archon game to play. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. From the reading I've done it appears that a game called XArchon was included in the repositories used by the Software Center's default settings in other Ubuntu versions, but it is not listed when I look there. I tried to download XArchon myself from this site http://xarchon.seul.org/ and eventually installed all the packages necessary. It said the installation was finished but I can't find it in my files anywhere. It would be so much easier to let the Software Center do it for me. Can anyone point me to a version that will work for me?

XArchon was removed from Ubuntu since the 9.10 release. See http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=520839 for more details. The most important problem with it is that it needs old GTK 1.2 libraries which are not present in the latest release of Ubuntu. So to get it working you would also need to install GTK 1.2 or install an older version of Ubuntu.

To install the older GTK 1.2 libraries I had to remove the new ones. I used the Synaptic Package Manager to do that, then installed the older libraries and their packages from some links. The only program I had that Synaptic said was dependent on the newer libraries was the XArchon game, so I removed it as well and reinstalled it after I got the old libraries. I now have a functioning game! Thanks a lot!

If you haven't done so already, I would recommend posting this as a new question in the forum. XArchon is a relatively simple battle chess game. If you are installing Battlefield 2 using a Linux compatible CD-ROM and having trouble, there is probably a simple step you are missing. You can also try Googling "How to install Battlefield 2 with Ubuntu." That's how I installed Google Earth.
