Do you use a proxy?

try running this in a terminal:
sudo apt-get install update
and then to update:
sudo apt-get install upgrade

I tried as you suggested. Following occurred-
Reading package list....Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information.....Done
E: Unable to locate package update

Then the $ prompt returns.

Also tried to download the Kino program via the Software Centre with similar
result ie failed to download package files.

Everything fine there.
Now please post output of:
sudo apt-get upgrade

For future case if package management has a hiccup switch to 'main server'.

Sam following is the last page of the output and to this amateur it appears
that the download was successful - plus I was also now able to download
Kino! I don't know what caused the problem but it is now fixed. Many thanks
for your assistance in this case and for keeping Ubuntu going.
