when you computer is up and running, press CTL+ALT+T to get into terminal.
they type

sudo lshw -C display

if you're asked for a password, type your password in. it won't show on the screen.

then copy and paste the output here.

In a terminal, try starting the display program directly:
sudo gnome-display-preferences

The resolution is in the upper right corner of the window that should appear.

Would that be
sudo gnome-display-preferences

 or
sudo gnome-display-properties
? On my system (ubuntu 10.10), it's the latter.

you do NOT use sudo with GUI apps. It is not appropriiate. If anything you should run:

gksudo gnome-display-preferences

And that is the correct way to run it.

Oops, thats
sudo gnome-display-properties

gksudo if that works for you (it probably will, since you own the desktop).

Can you help with this problem?
