Installed Geneweb but can't find it in Applications Menu

Asked by Wayne Koch

I installed a genealogy program called Geneweb from the Ubuntu Software Center but I don't see it in any of the Applications Menu sections. I am a newbe to Ubuntu Linux operating system so am struggling to get around right now.

Reading through some of the other questions with similar problems, there was mention of using the "Synaptic Packet Manager" in the System - Administration menu. I did this and found the geneweb package. It shows to be installed, so why am I not seeing it anywhere?

Thanks,
Wayne

some programs (e.g. adobe acrobat) require a reboot before it shows up in the menu.
it may have installed into another menu, so you'll have to look around and move it to where you want with alacarte.

If you run it from terminal, does it run?

I have rebooted my system and it still does not show up in any of the menus. I
right mouse button clicked on "Applications" and "Edit Menus" and went into each
of the menus and tried to find it that way but still did not find it.

As for running it in Terminal, I am not sure how to do that. I'm assuming I need
to cd to some folder that contains that program file but I don't know where to
cd to.

I opened a Terminal window and cd to /var/lib. I found a folder called geneweb but if I try to cd geneweb, it says permission denied. I did an ls -tl and saw the following protection:
drwxrws--- 5 root geneweb 4096 2010-10-20 13:32 geneweb

I know a little how to do things in UNIX but not very well. I'm thinking I may need to change the security??????????

If this is correct, could some tell me the command to do that, please?

In a Terminal (Applications ▶ Accessories ▶ Terminal) type:

geneweb

then press enter to see if the program starts. If the program opens, create a new item for Geneweb via Alacarte (right-click Applications and click on "Edit Menus"). Type a name, Geneweb, for the program, type geneweb in the command field and press OK to create the menu entry for the program.

I opened a new Terminal window and typed in geneweb and it displayed:

geneweb: command not found

you shouldn't need to cd to a directory, the command should be in your $PATH so should be launchable as you have tried. How did you install it?

I clicked Applications -- Ubuntu Software Center. I then searched for and found the Geneweb program and clicked the Install button. It seemed to install just fine. It says it's installed. I just can't find it.

I believe I have installed at least one other program from the Ubuntu Software Center with the same problem -- not able to find the program. I just chalked it up to not knowing what I'm doing.

Is it possible that my Ubuntu installation is corrupt? I co-installed it on a system that has Windows XP on it.

I am doing the installs as me logged in which is the same account I first created when installing Ubuntu. From what I've read, that account should have all the privileges needed to install programs. I've even checked in System -- Administration -- Users and Groups for what account type I have and it says I am Administrator.
