can't seem to install any software from the Ubuntu Software Center

Asked by Miguel Perez

I decided to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my netbook's hard drive after checking it out on a thumbdrive for a day or two. I now find that when I try to install software from the Ubuntu Software Center I get a msg that reads; Requires installation of untrusted packages.
This action would require the installation of packages from not authenticated sources. I follow the same steps I did when I was running off the thumb drive, this problem did not occur when Ubuntu was running on the thumbdrive. Please does anyone have any ideas. thanks much

Did you go into the update manager off the system menu and run all your updates? I bet after you do this it will work

Thanks for responding. After installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my Acer Aspire One 3 times it finally asked or rather told me there were updates. The updates downloaded and I was able to get addition software through the Ubuntu Software Center. Yet, after all that other issues cropped up that totally soured my feelings for what seemed like a nice alternative to windows. Sadly I have to say that I have no choice but to rever my little netbook back to win7. It wasn't the beast solution but it does all I need it to do.

Ubuntu Would not play a dvd on my external dvd samsung dvd drive (it tells me that it can't read the disk) VLC player couldn't do it either.

Win7 played the same dvd without so much as a hiccup.

Ubuntu wouldn't do some of the fun stuff (like the wobbly windows) but when it was running on a thumbdrive it did. It had run so well on the thumb drive, that I decided it should live on the hard drive. It's a shame that it didn't like the hard drive environment. The thumbdrive was ok for testing but not a long term solution. The 160gb drive would have given it enough space to function and grow.

Win7 may be slow on the 1.66 Atom processor but it works

Ubuntu ran better but if it doesn't want to work (or can't work) What would be the point.

Don't get me wrong I appreciate the time and interest you took in my little problem. I just came to the realization that after wasting a day trying to get it to work I just lost interest.

Win7 worked right out of the box.

It's not that I don't beleive that Ubuntu doesn't have its merits it just didn't want to work for me.

Thank you again

You completely failed to give the output requested and instead went on some emotional rant which helps nobody at all, most of all YOU.

If you can give the output of the command we can move forward. All the text above is worthless.

If you can give the output of the command we can move forward, its simply your choice....

In reply to your rant. You cannot play DVD as you don't currently have a decoder for it. There is one in the repo but your question states, you are unable to install applications, so we need to sort the first. A default install of Ubuntu does not come with a DVD decoder due to varying worldwide codec laws so the install ONLY comes with open codecs.

Once we get your package manager sorted (which the first step needed was given 22 hours ago and STILL no intelligent reply) then we can install what you need. If your package manager is having issues then you won't even be able to install regualr updates.

open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal

**Tip: right click with mouse on the top terminal windows title caption and select the menu item "Always on Top"
doing this you will force the terminal window to stay on top of the other windows and you will find very easy
to copy single row from this web page into the terminal...
Something more about using the terminal https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal

Then type or better copy and paste a row a time then press enter:
(Tip: select the single row to copy from this page then right click and select copy then click into the terminal window
and to quick paste click with middle button of mouse )

Copy and paste the rows below, copy and paste one row a time (see the **Tip) then press enter:

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get --fix-missing install
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get update

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Hope this helps
