Trouble installing and uninstalling programs
I've been having trouble installing and removing software from the Software Center. Just a few minutes ago, I tried to remove a program and a window opened up and said the removal had failed. In the "details" it said: installArchives() failed:....
It continued with a long list. I'm new to Ubuntu and have been experimenting. I may have messed something up. If need be I can reload it. I just don't want to make some of the same mistakes.

Mark:
The message is still appearing, even though the software looks installed and can be opened in "Applications". Some phrases included in the message are: No packages matching textive-base. At the bottom it says: Errors were encountered while processing: tex-common texlive bianaries. Any ideas?

The problem is that you are running Ubuntu 10.04, but you are mixing software repositories from Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic) and Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid) in your /etc/apt/
Mixing like this should NEVER be done as it will screw up your Ubuntu install. It should only contain repositories from lucid (Ubuntu 10.04) Too much damage to your 10.04 packages may have already been done, but you could try the following procedure (instead of a clean re-install of Ubuntu 10.04)
Run the following command in the Terminal:
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/
REMOVE all the contents of that file /etc/apt/
!!!!!!IMPORTANT

Do NOT copy-paste the contents from your Email client into the gedit editor, or else the contents of the sources.list file will get corrupted by the copy-paste operation!

I decided that I would reinstall the Ubuntu 10,04 again and start over. I had started using Ubuntu by downloading 9.10 from a disk and later when asked if I wanted to upgrade to the 10.04, I did.
You stated that I had mixed the 9.10 and 10.04 software repositories and it had caused the problem. I don't know what software repositories are but I'll try not to mix them again.
I appreciate your time and help.
Thank you again
