Loss of functionality with scanners

Asked by Tom Hunter

In 10.04 LTS my scanner worked fine ... I used XSANE and SIMPLE-SCAN . I upgraded to 10.10 and things still worked. I upgraded to 11.04 and all scanner functions died. I keep getting "Error during read: Error during device I/O". After posting a bug against 11.04 and trying a variety of things I expected it to get fixed or at least acknowledged. I did get some help from some forum users but to no avail. With 11.10 I again expected things to get fixed ... if not by my report then someone else's ... I did notice others had posted the same question. No such luck ... 11.10 is just as broken.

I loaded 10.04.3 on my test machine and tried things again .... I needed some assurance the scanner still worked. As expected, all worked great. Now the question is how do I get scanner support for 11.10 ... Previous tries were badly unsuccessful. I am looking for the old bug number but don't have it at the moment. I have the same problem with XSANE and SIMPLE-SCAN.

Guidance is appreciated.

have you gone to the avasys site and downloaded the driver for the scanner?

Hi Marcus. thanks for the quick follow up ... I am pasting what I did in June ... this is an old but VERY important issue to me. I like to keep up with sw but can't without a scanner ... TIA

----------------------------------------------------------------
From q 159966 --- June 20, 2011

I went to the avasys site and looked for the appropriate code for 11.04
64bit. No luck. The 32 bit code is there but not the 64. I did try the
32 bit but it installed silently, no errors and no clues on how to
activate it. I do realize this is another scan utility but things I
tried did not create any response. In the terminal window I tried
iScan, iscan, scan ... I also looked for an installed app but saw none.
Thanks for the help but still dead in the water.

Should I run this route again since 11.10 now has support for 32 bit drivers? (I use the 64 bit OS).

Hi I am working through unresolved issues for simple scan. Is this still an issue?

Hi Michael,

I hadn't heard anything for a long while so I need to check on 12.04 (my
current release level), and a later version than what I was using).
Give me a day please.

TIA ... TomH

Hi Michael,

I have an Epson GT-8200 and just tested it on 12.04 at the current patch
level (just got one online about 5 min ago). Simple Scan makes the scan
bar move and then quits (no error information apparent). I did load
XSANE 0.998 and it did a full scan motion but presented a dialog box
that said "Operation Cancelled". Just to check that the scanner worked
(did this test last time, not this time) I plugged it into a 10.04
system and it worked fine with both applications.

I also have a Canon PIXMA 870 AIO but not tackling this device now ...
and maybe not ever (PS it is cabled).

Please advise what I can do to help trace/track this.

TIA ... TomH

HI ...

I need to add the following. In checking the product tag on the back of
the Epson flatbed scanner, it is identified as a Epson Perfection 1650
Photo Model G850A. XSANE had identified it as a GT-8200 ... not sure if
this is just a marketing name switch or a mis identification by the
software.

the sane library (the backend for xsane and simple scan) sometimes groups similar models together and identifies them by one representative -- this might be the case here.

i suggest you write an email to the sane-devel mailing list: http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/listinfo/sane-devel
the guys there are more experienced with identifying and fixing regressions in the sane backends.

Can you help with this problem?
