Can we get a newer version of scala? (newest is 2.10.3)

Asked by Naftoli Gugenheim

Currently in a default ubuntu, sudo apt-get install scala installs 2.9.3, however that is an ancient version of scala. Would it be possible to update to 2.10.3?

Note: The scala team builds a .deb, see http://www.scala-lang.org/download/2.10.3.html under Other resources.

Thanks!

I suggest you report a bug. If the gains and bugfixes are significant then the package will be upgraded. Ubuntu is not a rolling release distro and packages are upgraded based on merit and urgency.

Yes the scala guys may make deb files but they may be focussing on Debian rather than Ubuntu which could break dependencies. This needs to be appreciated when adding these packages to the main repositories for the masses to use. Keep in mind the target audience of Ubutu ;)

I doubt it, I think more scala users are on Ubuntu than on Debian (just my personal impression). Anyway:

/tmp $ wget http://www.scala-lang.org/files/archive/scala-2.10.3.deb

  [...]

/tmp $ dpkg-deb -I scala-2.10.3.deb
 new debian package, version 2.0.
