Asked by erik von werlhof

Whenever I click on the Windows network icon, I am supposed to get a follow on icon that says workgroup but it never appears. Any ideas?

Make sure you install samba:

sudo apt-get install samba

You can then drop your system into the same workgroup by editing the workgroup name. run:

gksudo gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf

and change the workgroup line in the global section to match the workgroup name you use, save the file, close gedit then run:

sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart

Your system will now appear in the same workgroup as your other systems.

Hello, when i went to the gedit file to change the workgroup name I saw that the name of the workgroup I was trying to access was already entered. I am just wondering if there are any applications I need to remove or if there is some way I can get my system back to a "default configuration" so I can start over.

In the nautilus address bar simply type:

smb://<server name>/<share name>

e.g.

smb://fileserver/music

The share will then present itself. You need to share the folders using samba (default in windows) to see the folders, Mac will have samba as an option but this is not hard to setup.

Can you help with this problem?
