Natty SMB4 DOES NOT WORK.

Asked by clombard

Using 11.04 SMB4. Why is it so difficult to mount a shared network computer? On another O/S ...it is a simple matter of viewing network computers. Then click on one and the shared files appear. NOT so with SMB4 (now or before with 10.10).
I dont want to spend days tweaking my computer only to find I caused even more programs to not work!
Why can't it just work easily like you know who's O/S...?
If there is an easy fix please let me know.
Attached is a copy of the error message I get.
thanks.

PS. I see the option to attach a file is gone.

Why are you using smb4, why not just use samba?

"Why not just use samba?"
It works less than smb4 I find.

Judging by your question and issue, it clearly doesn't. I suggest you use samba. In what way does samba "work less"?

I downloaded samba. How do I see the other computers
in my home network? Is there a big setup?
With network places on my windows machine
I just click and see -and am able to mount-
the other computers in my home network.
How does that work with samba...?
thanks

Then you have no smb detectable shares. Or your network is blocking this traffic.

Seeing shares (browsing) and accessing shares are mutually exclusive. You don't need one for the other. By default Ubuntu will detect and mount your shares, but you have to look after permissions.

Unfortunately I don't see anything here describing what actions you took. Hence it's hard to know where to begin troubleshooting. You may need to add rules to your firewall, you may need to allow permissions, you may need to tell windows about your linux systems and that they are allowed to see and/or access your shares.

I'd suggest following the documentation:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EasyFileSharing

There is even a decent video (a bit outdated)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89hjWOb8qmY

Then advise us where it is failing for you. This can provide us a clearer understanding of what your problem could be.

That error is not applicable to your problem.

Good luck.

I can not copy it to comments)
HOWEVER I did type out the error message word for word
and NO ONE made any comment regarding it...
Perhaps that could be the problem?????????????????

I would advise removing any custom installs of Samba, and using the default configuration from Ubuntu Installation. Unless you're running or need to run Samba SERVER, the default should work.

But, if you prefer to do it this way...

I would refer to this wiki for troubleshooting and setting up:

http://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Samba4/HOWTO

If you can advise which steps you have followed and where the problem occurs it will allow us to help you more effectively.

Good luck.

I removed all Samba installations.
I installed Ubuntu from wubi (double boot machine).
There is a default Samba...I dont see it.
Do you mean install Samba from the Software Center...?
Did that several times AND Samba does NOT work.
Unable to retrieve file shares!
thanks

Tried the ip NG!
No firewall blocking.
This is a double boot machine. When I boot Windows mounting the shares
is ONE click.
I have been tweaking this Ubuntu for weeks now just to be able to share
files with my home network with no success.
Very frustrating!

Samba smb4k in Natty or 10.10 just does NOT work. However Konqueror is able to find my Network and mount shares
in 10.10. No problem.
Also I got the temperature display back in the menu bar.
Is the powerful browser Konqueror in 11.04...?
Some things are best left alone I guess.

Like so many "upgrades" in the past we always seem to lose
some small feature or ability we enjoyed when new versions come out.
Konqueror (version 4.5.5) in 10.10 works great
to locate and share other home network files.
You sent me a link for Konqueror for Natty 11.04 (kde version 4.6.2).
That konqueror does not find any network folders and produces the same
old messages ("no network files found")!
It does not work like the previous version. Is there a way I can install
Konqueror version 4.5.5 in Natty...?
thanks
