s-nail 14.9.15 on 20.04 LTS is old and buggy

Asked by Stephen Isard

See changelog for a list of bugs fixed since s-nail 14.9.15. The s-nail 14.9.21 .deb at https://packages.debian.org/buster-backports/amd64/s-nail/download works on 20.04 LTS, so there seems no obstacle to upgrading.

Manfred Hampl suggests this article as an answer to your question:
FAQ #3037: “no rolling release”.

I suggest that you create a bug report, either requesting an SRU because of the bugs that are fixed, or requesting a backport.
Eventually you can create a PPA that delivers the updated version.

Hello,

Thanks for your reply. I'm new to ubuntu and don't know what SRU and
PPA stand for, but I have been using, and occasionally even contributing
to, s-nail and its mailx predecessors for a long time. If you look at
the changelog for s-nail since v.14.9.15, you can see that there are a
_lot_ of bug fixes and improvements. I'm not sure what the difference
between and SRU and a backport would amount to. I do know that the
latest tarball compiles and runs with no problems on my ubuntu 20.04 LTS
and also that .deb's for later versions than 14.9.15 install and run, so
I don't think any work would be required on the code itself.
