Importing music into RhythmBox

Asked by Owermohlesr

Just installed Ubuntu, currently trying to find a way to play my music. I have it all on an ext hard drive, have imported to the "music" folder, but cannot play it in rhythmbox (I formerly used itunes; none of these songs are purchases though). Do I have to convert the format? What program is best for that? IS there another music player that supports these files?

Open Ubuntu Software Centre and find your way to Get Free Software -> Sound & Video -> GStreamer extra plugins

Install the GStreamer extra plugins and that should give you mp3 and some other audio file support. They can't pre-install it for you for legal reasons.

You might like to install "GStreamer plugins for aac, xvid, mpeg2, faad" too while you're there, in case you've got any music ripped to the default iTunes AAC format.

Good luck and welcome to Ubuntu!

Those plugins are already installed. I've also installed the sound converter and converted some of my music to .ogg files, but rhythm box won't play them and they end up being played in the movie player.

Nevermind, I installed Songbird instead and can now rock out. Thank you for your help, I am already enjoying Ubuntu very much!
