Rhythmbox causes delays to cpu & itself

When I start RB I have to wait for a while before I can select any music to play and if I change the volume it freezes my laptop. I can still move the mouse but the windows are delayed for a long time. I have ubuntu 10.04 installed but I'm not sure if there are extra plugin's I'm meant to install too.
Ideas?

I'm not interested to upgrading to a version that's still in beta.
Anything more productive- like telling me why this might be happening, what could be causing a conflict, and what possible solutions I can try?
