Ubuntu 10.04 + Rhythmbox + iPod Nano 8GB

Asked by NakiMum

I've been searching the web, forums, etc for a solution to getting an iPod Nano synced to Ubuntu 10.04.
I'm using Rhythmbox which is the easiest for me. I see that the music is syncing to the ipod, but as soon as i safely remove it from the usb port and check to see the music it says there are 0 files.

I've tried .mp3; AAC; I even tried .wma but nothing worked.

gtkpod is useless to me unless i can get the step-by-step instructions! LOL

Hi Actionparsnip

that did help to an extent.
The iPod is now seen by Rythmbox and I can transfer .mp3 songs to the iPod.
Once I eject the ipod from rythmbox and look for the songs on the ipos it still shows me i've got 0 songs.
Could be that i'm missing something small

Cheers

Hi all

after tons of (very frustrating) searches on Google (wherelse) I came up with the following. I wanted to keep this process as Windows free as I could but there just was no way.

I took my iPod to a friends place who still Windows and hooked the iPod up to iTunes. Restored, synced and loaded songs onto it. Plugged it into my Ubuntu-system and I could load and delete songs to my liking with Rhythmbox. I haven't tried Amarok or GTKPod again, but I'm not planning on using them either.

So thankfully I've done the Windows bit of the process. Now I'm back to Ubuntu - the way I like it.

Thanks anyway to Actionparsnip, you tried to help.

THIS IS FOR MY REFERENCE in case of future madness:

I'm using gtkpod 1.0.0 and installed sudo apt-get install libmp4v2-0 (which I got from https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/16986). Now I can load podcasts, pictures, videos (in .mp4 format).

Once again Ubuntu Launchpad comes to the rescue. ;-)

Hi NakiMum,

I recently acquired an iPod nano 6th generation and this procedure worked for me in Ubuntu 13.10:

1) perform a restore of the ipod nano to factory settings in itunes in Windows
2) set up ipod for first time use in itunes in Windows
3) install spotify-client in Ubuntu 13.10 using these 4 commands:

sudo DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 94558F59
sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://repository.spotify.com stable non-free" >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/spotify.list'
sudo DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive apt-get update
sudo DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive apt-get --yes --force-yes install spotify-client

4) then run spotify and it should just work fine... You should be able to sync files between Ubuntu and the ipod nano.

Hope this helps,

Mark

Hi Mark
thanks for the follow-up. I've actually sold the iPod about 2yrs ago and have since been usingSamsung Galaxies and have found the SG's better to deal with than Apple products
