How do I automount partitions on ubuntu?

Asked by David M.

I have a dual boot computer with 3 partitions, one for ubuntu, one for windows (I'm a gamer I need it) and one for any data both systems would use like music, movies and documents. By default when I boot up in ubuntu only the linux partition is mounted and if I reference say rythambox to my music archive on my data partition I have to mount it manually. How do I automatically mount a partition a boot so I don't have to do it manually every time?

You can add entrys in /etc/fstab and they will mount at boot.

This tutorial is for mounting windows. I am not trying to change what OS
boots up I just want my third partition to mount automatically. In any
event I don't know enough to understand what they are doing in those
instructions in order to extrapolate a solution of my own. If I am to use
terminal and fstab I would need more detailed information.

To edit the /etc/fstab file is always dangerous if you are not very familiar with Linux configuration.
I would advise you to try what is in the software center:

I searched for "partition" and the third item looks fine to me: MountManager. Or look for "pysdm", it seems even easier.

If the partition is readable from windows it will be NTFS or FAT32, either way if you want them to mount you will need to edit fstab or use pysdm if you prefer a gui. The gui will get you working faster but you will learn a lot less about the OS. Your call.

Can you help with this problem?
