web pages with video cause my system to lose audio

whenever i open a web page which has video in it (Youtube etc) i lose audio in all my other apps, vlc amarok audio preview etc. I have to restart to get audio back. i have an acer aspire 5570 laptop and have had this problem through several ubuntu distro updates up to 8.04

This looks very similar to bug #254405. You might find advice in the bug comments.

I use Hardy 8.04 with pulseaudio and package 'libflashsupport', but I don't have flashplugin-nonfree, because of 64bit, I use Adobe. No problems here running separate apps at the same time.

btw. YouTube videos can also be watched with Totem. Sidebar - dropdown list - YouTube
