Crackling sound in 10.04 with any sound card
Hi,
I juste installed a stock Ubuntu 10.04 amd64 but I keep getting crackling sound.
It's really light crackling but it's really annoying and it's happening on the two sound cards on my PC:

The post is originally for the previous version of Ubuntu but someone on Ubuntu Forums seems to have solved a similar problem so perhaps it's worth taking a look:

I did not do all that was described, because I get sound, it's just souding crackly at times.

Lib and driver version differ. I'd say upgrade Alsa as suggested by troubleshooting page.
Since I'm not an expert, I assume you need to disable either one of recognized soundcards, e.g. using only the one onboard.

You are right, but I have the stock 10.04 kernel and the updated 10.04 alsa packages.
I'll try disabling the unused cards

This is not an ALSA problem. I just removed pulseaudio from my system and the sound is finally normal.
But it's a hack, there should be an easy way for all of us owning ok sound cards with hardware mixing to disable pulseaudio.
Can you help with this problem?
