using 9.10 my sound disappeared after installing codecs from ubuntu site

Asked by treetaxi

upgraded to ubuntu 9.10, installed Miro but it wouldn't play any of the files. installed the proprietary codecs from Ubuntu's site, and the sound disappeared. -- It's not just silent, the little speaker icon on the task-bar disappeared. As I was rebooting after installing the codecs, a dialogue box opened up just as the screen shut down -- something about "accounts manager". I re-installed alsa but still no icon, no sound, no joy.

Well, this is embarrassing, the sound is back. I think this is more of a feature than a bug, to wit: The login screen will sometimes for esoteric reasons start you out in failsafe mode. The notification of this fact is very small and easy to miss.

I've noticed other posts of the "it was gone and miraculously now it's back" type, and suspect this may be the cause of a lot of unnecessary grief. hopefully Lucid Lynx will have a better login screen.
