PIDGIN - SHOWING A FOTO

Asked by David38840

I am used to using MSN messenger with Windows and automaticall on the page you have a picture of the person you are talking to and you can put your own picture on the screen too. With Pidgin there is a space for the picture of the person you are talking to as in MSN, but my picture on the Pidgin screen is is tiny. Can anyone tell me how to make my picture bigger?
Many thanks

I don't think it's possible to make it any bigger I'm afraid, not that I see anyway.

Oh dear that's a shame as the picture is really small!!! The problem I encountered with aMSN messenger was that they gave you various options for the picture size and I tried them all, but the very large one took over and I couldn't remove it so decided to use Pidgin which I quite like apart from the picture size! Does anybody know of a better messenger to use or how to change the picture size in MSN as I tried everything to no avail.
Regards and thanks for your reply David.

Don't know what I've done, but when I click on to open my Pidgin messenger nothing happens, it won't open. Does anybody know why this is happening?

Could you try and load pidgin from the terminal, to see if it brings up any errors:

(Applications>Accessories>Terminal)

Thanks very much for this info. I suppose before I do this I will need to delete it first? I have tried doing this but there are so many components I don't know which ones to delete. Some have the Ubuntu logo at the side any idea what this means or refers to?
If I load from the terminal how do I do this as I am new and clueless as you can see?
Thanks a million

Don't delete anything just yet!

An easy way to remove then reinstall Pidgin is to use the Add/Remove Applications panel:

Click on the following menu to open it Applications>Add/Remove..

Now type Pidgin in the search box, un-check the tick box next to Pidgin, then click the 'Apply Changes' button on the bottom right, then follow what it says until Pidgin has been successfully removed..

Now to reinstall Pidgin go back into the Add/Remove panel, search for Pidgin again, 'tick' the little box this time, and again 'Apply' those changes - now you should have Pidgin re-installed again.

Try loading Pidgin again to see if it works this time..

I tried going into Add/Remove as you said and when I uncheck the tick
box up pops a message saying :
CANNOT REMOVE PIDGIN
One or more applications depend on Pidgin. To remove Pidgin and the
dependent applications, use the Synaptic Package Manager. If I go to the
Syanptics then there are lots of bits and pieces to remove and I don't
know what is relevant or not. Do you know the Ubuntu logo means next to
any of the applications in the Synaptic Package manager.
Thanks again

I think the Ubuntu logo just means that it's an officially supported package by Ubuntu, as oppose to being community maintained or 3rd party.

Let's try running Pidgin from the terminal, just to see if it outputs any errors:

Go to 'Applications>Accessories>Terminal' to open up a terminal window..

Now in this window type 'pidgin' (without the quotes) and hit enter.

Does the terminal output any messages? If so could you copy and paste them here, if they're not too long.

Thanks.

Hi David and thanks for your response.
When I open up the terminal it always opens with the following text :
david@david-desktop:-$ followed by a space
I then typed in without quotes or anything the word pidgin
and enter
- on the next line it repeated again david@david-desktop:-$ space
repeating several times it did exactly the same thing ....
david@david-desktop
A mystery ????
Thanks

Oh well, it was worth a try.

What applications is Synaptic saying that are dependent on Pidgin?

Bad news I'm not the only one having problems with Pidgin. Perhaps I
should de install and put in something else if it's not going to work
properly.

Oh I just remembered Synaptic has a reinstallation option..

If you go back into Synaptic, search for Pidgin, then right-click and select 'Mark for Reinstallation then try applying that..

up. I have these ones actually installed :
nautilus sendto
pidgin
pidgin data
pidgin dbg
pidgin librvgp
pidgin-plugin-pack

All the following aren't yet installed :
gaim
gaim-extendedprefs
gaim-guifications
gaim-hotkeys
gaim-irchelper
gaim-lifnotify
gaim-thinklight
pidgin-blinklight
pidgin-dev
pidgin-encryption
pidgin-extprefs
pidgin-guifications
pidgin-hotkeys
pidgin-notify
pidgin-otr
telepathy-haze

Does this help??? Uff - what a problem!!!!

I don't know what else to try.. I installed all the same packages as you've got and my Pidgin still loads..

Have you got all the latest updates installed?

Oh, and could you try the terminal again, but this time type in the following command (without quotes):

'pidgin --debug'

and let me know what you get.

No comment on my part. I am absolutely clueless. If anyone can give me
guidance.
Thanks

I think I may have found a solution, thanks to a post on the forums:

Navigate to this folder /home/david/.purple/ and delete all the files with a .xml extension..

The folder is a hidden one, so to show hidden files and folder hit ctrl+h or go to the View menu.

Now try and load Pidgin again....

I'm doubtful but it's worth a try.

If I don't reply any time soon then I've probably gone to bed :)

I think I did it O.K. went to desktop put in /home/david/.purple/
entered and then sent to trash the .xml extension.
Reloaded Pidgin but still doesn't work.
Did I follow your instructions to the dot???

I think you followed my instructions fine.

I really don't have any other ideas to suggest I'm afraid ..

This may sound like a silly question but, once you click to load Pidgin its icon isn't showing in your taskbar at the top right of the screen, is it?

David many thanks for your reply and I am pleased to confirm I now have
Pidgin up and running.
I did make some changes as suggested and this did solution the problem.
You are right of course the icon was on the top right of the screen
which I didn't know about too! Having clicked on the icon it opens up!!!
I must say the only thing I don't like about Pidgin is the fact that you
can only see photos very small. Apart from that it does seem to be very
good.
Kindest regards and thanks again for your collaboration.
