Why in Open Office is Bold a Large A

I have noticed my Icons for Bold ia large A, Italic is a slanted A. Is this normal?

Can I change to the universal B for bold?

Yes. It's normal. It's just the way the developers chose to make the icons.
The A doesn't mean anything. It just stands for text. Bold A = bold text,
etc. There may be replacement icons out there but I don't know. All the icon
has to do is convey the meaning. Now that you know the meaning there is
probably little benefit in changing it.
