I cannot get spellcheck to work

also, i am using the latest version of ubuntu, and when i go to
tools/language/spellcheck no language appears in the drop down menu and i am
told that the spell check is complete.

Ok, you have downloaded and installed the correct language package (English Canada). Try to do the following:

1: Click Tools > Options
2: Click Language Settings
3: Click Languages
4: In the box "Language of" the entry Locale setting should contain your language (English Canada)
5: In the box "Default languages for documents" the entry Western should contain your language (English Canada)
6: Left click Writing aids
7: Make sure that the spellchecker, the thesaurus and the hyphenation are active

If all these things have done, the button of the Western entry in the box "Default languages for documents" should be marked with a character sine.

I had done all of those things and still no luck. The only thing that is different - is - "Default languages for documents" - does not have a mark but the drop down box has English Canada.

Also, when I go to Tools / Spelling&Grammar / in the "text language" box there is no language appearing and the spell check tells me "OpenOffice.org 3.0 The Spell Check is Complete" but it is not and was not done.

Any ideas?

I have OpenOffice 3.0.1 installed and there's no spellcheck in tools/language/

If I go Tools-->Options-->Language Settings-->Writing Aids and check there under Options "Check spelling as you type" the spelling begins to work.

Ahhhh!

I just went through the process of updating to openoffice 3.1.0 with the hope that something would change. Nothing! I also had already done what Vihar kindly suggested.

Still no spell check. :(

any more ideas?

Unbelievable! that is what it was!

Open Office does not support English (Canada). Unless of course i did not load the dictionary correctly unless of course it came with the package.

No our's and a fewer z's but alas i can live with that rather than no spell check at all!

Phew - that was painful but i learned alot.

Try also Drwejensen's advice. His solving is clearer.
