How to update OO

Asked by brianr

Having followed the links from OpenOffice about updating it I found that I came to a dead-end. The instructions didn't tally with what I saw on the screen. The OO Help option brought me here even thought I realise that this is not a Ubuntu problem -why was I directed to your forum ?

How did you install OpenOffice?
Via Synaptic (the offical package)
Via third party sources
Via downloading from website

Dear Sam,
My OO (v2.4) came with Ubuntu 7 on a CD. Since then I have updated
Ubuntu to 8.04. I have found a few oddities with my OO but I have to
say that I have also seen OO 3.00 on a Vista machine and I don't like
the opening screen.
Even so, I guess it makes sense to update my OO 2.4 I didn't see a way
of doing that with Ubuntu's Synaptic PM. That's why I tried within OO.
I have seen downloads on the OO website but they seemed to be the whole
package rather than just upgrading.
I hope this is clear enough.
Thanks for your interest,
Brian

While I can't help with upgrading OpenOffice using synaptic as the situation stands, I do know that OO 3.0 is included in Jaunty. Therefore, I suggest either waiting for it to become available in backports, if it ever does (although the stability of backports rather defeats the purpose of using an LTS release), or upgrading to Jaunty after it is released. If you decide to upgrade, it's probably a good idea to wait a couple of days after release (23rd of April - yes, nine days) so that the demand on the servers can go down a bit.

Actually, come to think of it, if OpenOffice offer Ubuntu .deb packages, these will be pretty much identical to any upgrade - your settings are stored in your user area, and the package should just replace the executable and associated stuff.

Brian,
as above suggested it's your choice of priority to wait for official Jaunty release.
The next LTS release of Ubuntu will be 10.04 LTS, in April 2010.

However, if you have currently Hardy LTS, please note that you cant't just skip the upgrade to Intrepid 8.10 first.
Hence you'll have to change the default setting which is 'Upgrade to next LTS' to 'Upgrade to normal releases' or similar in system administration -> software sources to upgrade to Intrepid and then to Jaunty.

Other options: New installation
or try this with caution:

To upgrade OpenOffice.org without installing Ubuntu Jaunty, follow this guide:

http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-To-Install-OpenOffice-org-3-0-in-Ubuntu-8-10-96449.shtml

That guide contains screnshots that will let you follow the guide easyly.

The guide is for Ubuntu 8.10, but it can be used for Ubuntu 8.04.
Just pay attention and substitute intrepid for hardy:

I guess everyone already knows that OpenOffice.org 3.0.0 will not be available (sad, I know) for the Intrepid Ibex (Ubuntu 8.10), because the developers did not have enough time to test it, and they will introduce it later this year. Therefore, Ubuntu 8.10 ships with OpenOffice.org 2.4.1 and, if you want to use the new and improved version, then this guide is for you! However, we will not do a fresh install of the OpenOffice suite, as we will instead only upgrade the current version in Ubuntu Intrepid.

What do I need to get started? Ubuntu 8.10 (32-bit or 64-bit), which can be downloaded from here.

OK, so... first thing, you must add the OpenOffice.org 3.0 repositories, then upgrade the installed packages. Follow the steps below!

STEP 1 - Add the OpenOffice.org 3 repositories

Go to System -> Administration -> Software Sources...

Go to the second tab, "Third-Party Software," click on the "Add" button, and paste the line below...

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu intrepid main

Right click HERE and "Save Link As..." the key file on your desktop. Go to the fourth tab, "Authentication", click the "Import Key File" button, navigate to the location were you've just saved the key file (File System/home/YOURUSERNAME/Desktop) and double click it. You will immediately see a new entry called "247D1CFF 2009-01-21 Launchpad PPA for OpenOffice.org Scribblers".

Now, click the “Close” button, then the “Reload” one and wait for the application to close!

STEP 2 - Update OpenOffice to version 3.0.0

When the Software Sources window will close itself, the update icon will appear in the system tray...

Click on it and update your system! That's all, folks! Your open source office suite will be up-to-date from now on. Take a look below for some shots of OpenOffice.org 3.0 in Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex).

A number of replies came in, some depending on the timing of the new Ubuntu upgrades (Jaunty etc.), so I'll say that I regard my question as solved. Thanks to all.
